Yup, so did the 924 and the 928.

As a matter of fact, all the water cooled Porsches before the Cayenne had rear transaxles.

Porsche pioneered this technology for production cars back in 1975.

There're two variants for the 944 trans-diff, turbo and non-turbo. Any sort of powerful engine swap usually recommends the incredibly strong turbo variant going in.

It was a drawing of the Olds Turbo Jetfire system, which isn't showing for me either except on expanding. Regardless: the Turbo Jetfire was totally a production car, if not ready for primetime.

I didn't realize the 944 had a rear mounted transmission either.

I found out after I bought it.

Then it needed a clutch change.

That bastard is still on jackstands.

Corvair has a very successful turbo option from '62-67.

Being a pioneer does not necessarily mean being the first.

True. But, as Xanth pointed out, GM wasn't all failure on the turbo front, and citing a year in which something was "pioneered" typically indicates a claim to be a first in some respect - first successful is perhaps what they meant, but the layman could be expected to take it in the simplest form - "first". IOW, there is some deceptive practice here: "as father of the car turbo..." GM: "You what."

I think what Porsche meant was "Pioneer in turbocharged rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive production sports cars that is going to kill you with a flat six displacing more than 2.7L coupled to a four-speed trans and fuel injection".

Sounds about right.

So, pioneer in having fuel injection, otherwise a turbo Corvair.

Sounds about right indeed.

Turbo Corvair with 260hp, massive turbo lag and 160mph top speed. And more dangerous.

So, what we're getting at is that Porsche and GM were pioneering *different things*, but just slightly different - e.g. death via speed or by surprise axle event. The Fred and George of air-cooled RR turbo death, as it were.

Porsche pioneered this technology to make clutch swaps multi-hour-long bouts of pure misery.
